The Migration Observatory Lab
The Migration Observatory Lab is a research and policy programme at the Centre of African Studies (CEAUP), University of Porto. We sit at the intersection of academic rigour and real-world action — generating knowledge, building capacity, and engaging with the systems that shape human mobility globally.
An outgrowth of Portugal's Rabat Process chairmanship, the Lab serves as a Knowledge Partner as Nigeria takes over chairmanship 2025–2026, bridging African and European perspectives on migration governance.
Based at the University of Porto, we maintain an active international network of partners and collaborators across Europe, Africa, and beyond. We believe migration is not a problem to be managed — it is a fundamental dimension of the human condition, demanding interdisciplinary, ethical, and forward-thinking responses.

To be a globally recognised centre of excellence for migration research, data, and policy innovation — bridging academic knowledge with actionable insights that improve the lives of migrants and host communities.

To generate rigorous, evidence-based research and foster interdisciplinary collaboration that informs inclusive migration governance, advances human rights, and supports sustainable development at regional and global levels.
Our Story
Foundations
Established within the Centre of African Studies at the University of Porto, building on years of migration research expertise.
Rabat Process
Emerged as a key knowledge partner during Portugal's Rabat Process chairmanship, cementing our role in EU-Africa migration dialogue.
Observatory Launch
Officially launched as the Migration Observatory Lab, expanding to cover the 2025–2030 programme cycle as Nigeria assumes Rabat chairmanship.
